1. Explain community-policing. List the advantages and disadvantages of community policing. Detail the two most important points for police agencies in utilizing this perspective.

Community Policing brings police and citizens together to avoid crime and solve neighborhood problems. The emphasis is on stopping crime before it happens, not responding to calls for service after the crime occurs with community policing. Community policing gives citizens more control over the standard of living inside their community. Community policing means police become the main neighborhood. This can help police get a significantly better sense of resident’s needs and helps residents to build up greater rely upon law enforcement. In essence the community joins the authorities department. Those “who think that community policing is practiced in their neighborhood are more likely to express favorable opinions of the police.”(Weitzer & Tuch, 2006, p. 45) Together, in partnership, the city and police department come together to realize a goal that is common of safer, better spot to live. It is “democracy for action.”(BJA, 1994, p. 4) august.

Community policing is seen as an effective way to promote public safety also to enhance the well being in a community. Community policing plays a role that is pivotal the two defining elements of policing: police-community relations and problem-solving. “First, it will broaden police organization goals …Second, it should alter the way police are organized to complete their goals.” (Weisburd & Braga, 2007, p. 47) Active participation is needed through the local government to your average citizen to allow community policing to focus. Many people are responsible for safeguarding the welfare associated with neighborhood. The goals of policing are expanded and the perception of community is changed unlike traditional policing methods. Traditional policing assumes that the problems of society are not in the realm of law enforcement department. Traditional police departments are strictly reactive and don’t look beyond efficiently resolving the immediate incident in front of you. Police officers are tied to the dispatcher and rarely have enough time to complete more than answer one call after another. The police department, as a business, separates itself through the city’s infrastructure and from city services.

Implementing community policing changes the structure of policing and how it really is managed. Community policing helps build up and bolster the community. It also links the police therefore the community together. The partnership that develops over time can ultimately help the police find the underlying causes of crime inside the neighborhood. By getting the grouped community involved, the police have significantly more resources available to them to simply help in crime prevention. By familiarizing themselves with the members of the community, officers are more inclined to obtain valuable information regarding criminals and their activities. They are also almost certainly going to obtain a reliable evaluation associated with needs of citizens and their expectations of this police.

As previously stated, community policing plays a major part in police-community relations and problem-solving. So that you can develop a partnership utilizing the community, first the authorities must form a relationship that is great a nearby. Law enforcement must make an effort to involve the area with its pursuit to regulate crime. Most community concerns and solutions are identified through problem-solving. The objective would be to to minimize crime and disorder by diligently examining the attributes of concerns in communities after which using the best suited problem-solving solutions.

With any way of policing there are going to be advantages and disadvantages. One of several advantages that are main community policing is the fact that it reduces fear in the neighborhood. With a rise in police presence within the neighborhood the residents feel more secure. This sense of security helps the police establish trust within the community custom writings. As citizen become more active in taking care of their community, they begin to understand what officers actually do on a day-to-day basis. This improves police-community relations. Ultimately, quality of life for the community improves and crime is reduced. Another advantage is the fact that grouped community policing is flexible and capable of changing. The solutions and strategies change because the community changes. If a strategy works in one single community it doesn’t mean that it will be able to work in most communities. Community policing allows the community to create solutions that will work of their neighborhood that is own and change or eliminate those that do not work. Community policing could be implemented in a limitless wide range of ways. This is also true of problem-solving. They both are only limited by one’s imagination. Community policing offers an array of benefits. Making use that is effective of talents and resources available within communities can help extend severely strained police resources. Also, reduced degrees of crime will allow more police resources to be assigned to services that have the impact that is greatest on the quality of community life.

A disadvantage that is major that the only method that community policing is with community involvement.

There needs to be a proven partnership amongst the police officers as well as the community. Minus the trust and involvement associated with the community, any attempts at community policing will fail. “Police and there would-be partners do not always value the same, or even compatible, things” (Thacher, 2001, p. 766). Effective community policing requires a long-term commitment from everyone involved. It is really not a fix that is quick. Ongoing relationships should be maintained and established. Another disadvantage to community policing is making sure that the people that are right heading up the project. The main focus must be of improving the community rather than with the program to advance their very own personal career or agendas. Also, programs like community policing can be regressive. Oftentimes if you have a problem that needs assistance from the community it appear to be the people that are same step of progress. They are usually the homeowners which have longstanding ties towards the community. Community policing requires involvement that is everyone’s not only the home owners.

“Over 10 years after it was first introduced, community policing remains the most important innovation in American policing today.” (Forman, Autumn 2002, p. 1) the benefits of implementing community policing still outweigh the disadvantages. Getting the grouped community on the website side can only benefit law enforcement in their aid to regulate and stop crime. Also, using the police more mixed up in daily activities for the community will assist in the revitalization of the community. This may only happen if both the authorities while the community are prepared to put in enough time, effort, and patience that is required when implementing the community policing program.
